2023 Toyota GR Supra V6 to flaunt a stick

Both the four- and six-cylinder versions of the Toyota GR Supra come with an eight-speed automatic transmission manufactured by ZF. Despite the automatic's capabilities, enthusiasts have been calling out for a manual transmission. The reborn Supra may have even been rumoured to come with a manual transmission, but when the veils were lifted on the reborn sports car, Toyota only offered an automatic.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Will the 2023 Toyota Supra have a manual transmission?

As per the recently leaked Toyota press release, the upcoming 2023 Supra will have a manual transmission with the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine.

Aftermarket manufacturers seized the opportunity, and you can now get an expensive manual conversion kit installed on the Supra. New evidence, however, suggests that Toyota will offer a manual transmission from the factory. According to Creative311, a press release due to be published on April 28 says so. Several interesting details are revealed in the press release, including the start of production of manual versions, which will occur at the Magna Steyr plant in July 2022 before the start of sales in October.

As with the automatic, the manual GR Supra will also feature cruise control, but it will be without autonomous emergency braking. It will also be without the paddle shifters. In addition, only the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine will be available with the manual transmission, shown in the images paired with the RZ trim, while the four-cylinder SZ and SZ-R will miss out on the stick.

The manual GR Supra will also be offered in a special edition with unique wheels and a matte white finish. Additionally, genuine tan leather and specific interior trim pieces will be on offer at a premium - 550,000 yen (SGD 6,491) over the standard RZ, which starts at 7.313 million yen (SGD 86,315) now.

As long as Toyota doesn't confirm anything officially, we'll have to take this leak with a grain of salt for now, although Toyota has stated in the past that it has already prepared a manual version of the GR Supra. GR Supra's father, Tetsuya Tada, who has been asked repeatedly for a manual, also said it's possible. As of now, we're waiting for Toyota to deliver on what's said in the leak on April 28.
