Almost 500k cars called back by Tesla for trunk and reverse camera issues

Elon Musk’s Tesla has to call back 475,000 Model S and Model 3 EVs in the USA due to its persisting issues relating to its front trunk and reverse camera. Almost 356,309 Model 3 EVs from 2017-2020 were called back. According to the NHTSA or the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these trunk and camera issues might increase the chances of road accidents.

For the Model 3 vehicles from 2017-2020, the issue lies with the camera. It was further elaborated that the rearview camera cables on the models were damaged due to the functioning of the trunk lid. This prevents the rearview camera from displaying images and can be a big cause of accidents.

On the other hand, 119,009 units of the Model S were facing some problems with the front hood. Due to some latch problems, the hood might pop up at any moment obstructing the view of the driver, leading to a fatal car crash. However, Tesla added that they have not received any news related to deaths, injuries, or crashes due to the above-stated issues.

And not just in the USA, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation also asked the company to call back almost 200,000 models last week. This number includes 144,208 China-made Model 3s, 35,836 imported Model 3s, and 19,697 imported Model S cars.

Tesla has called back 2015-2020 EVs due to probable risks regarding faulty reverse camera and trunk lid latches. They have also been receiving warnings regarding their gaming feature, which they have now agreed to disable.

In August 2021, the NHTSA also started a formal safety probe into Tesla’s famed Autopilot driver-assist system after continued reports of accidents involving their vehicles.

Lastly, some reports even suggested there were problems regarding the side view cameras. We are yet to receive any news on that front. Till then, stay tuned.
