Chery makes a comeback to Indonesia with Omoda 5, eQ1, and others
The Chinese automaker Chery was supposed to set foot in the Indonesia market with their Q4 last year. However, thanks to the pandemic, these plans were delayed. And yesterday, they finally came back at the IIMS or International Motor Show Hybrid 2022 event.
Chery brought several new vehicles to this year's lineup, including a new all-electric eQ1 mini-car and a new B-segment SUV, the Omoda 5. The SUV will be powered by a TGDI 1.6L petrol engine similar to Chery's Kunpeng engine versions. It is expected to have a power output of 197 PS and a maximum torque of 290 Nm.
The Omoda 5 will come with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with the drive sent to the vehicle's front wheel. In addition, there are rumors that this SUV will receive electric and hybrid versions, but no confirmation has been made yet.
Apart from these two vehicles, Chery also brought forward the Tiggo 8 Pro, 7 Pro, and 4 Pro SUVs. The Chinese automaker has other regional plans for Indonesia as well. For example, they might be setting up an Indonesia-based R&D team to get a better idea about the ASEAN market.
The Tiggo core models and the Omoda 5 SUV might be introduced in the Malaysian market shortly. After all, they are scheduled to make a comeback in Malaysia by the end of this year itself. Indonesia and Malaysia are two of the very few markets to receive these SUVs outside China.
There hasn't been any such news yet about Chery's comeback in Singapore, but we hope to hear something soon. Till then, stay tuned.
