Cupra Formentor VZ5 teaser released, debut on February 22
Cupra is all set to introduce the range-topping version of its Formentor SUV, specifically designed for the brand. Termed as its ‘flagship’ model by the SEAT-owned brand, the Formentor ‘VZ5’ is set to be unveiled on Monday, February 22, on the brand’s third anniversary.
The new VZ5 will have a five-cylinder engine, which is expected to be the same one available under the hood of the Audi RS Q3. The VZ5 nameplate is derived from the Spanish word ‘Veloz’, which means fast, however, 5 denominates the number of cylinders in the car.
The upcoming VZ5 will be kicking in kilometers with a 2.5L engine, the technical specifications of which have not been disclosed yet. However, considering that the RS Q3 makes out 390 bhp from the engine, we can expect it to produce well over 400 bhp.
According to the officials, the Formentor VZ5 “is the ultimate technology transfer between the racing world and the road cars.” Besides this, “The addition of an even more extreme five-cylinder engine to the family – along with seven other powertrains that include performance PHEVs - will mark it out as a true enthusiast vehicle.”
Cupra has essentially split the Formentor range in two, allowing the buyers to select from a 1.4L TSI PHEV mill, churning out 240 bhp and 400 Nm, or a more powerful 2.0 TSI version, giving out 295 hp of power and peak torque of up to 400 Nm.
Third, on the list is a PHEV variant, equipped with an effective battery pack of 15 kWh, giving out a nice all-electric range of 50 km. Interestingly, all the options of the existing lineup include Volkswagen Group’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) setup.
Lastly, besides having our first look at the Formentor VZ5, Cupra might also take the opportunity to introduce other significant announcements around its plug-in hybrid powertrains. Whatever the case be, the wait won’t be long!
