Japan’s established automakers team up to form JAMBE
Considering the competition that China has been putting up, Japan’s top car manufacturers (Subaru, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Toyota) have teamed up with five parts suppliers (Panasonic, Denso, Aisin, Jatco, and Mitsubishi Electric). Together, this grand amalgamation has agreed to standardize vehicle designs for fast development and cost reduction.
Together, the 10 major companies will be the founders of Japan Automotive Model-Based Engineering (JAMBE). The aim of JAMBE is to promote the use of model-based development (MBD). The primary aim for which is to take over the competition by China.
It’s evident that China is all set to be the global leader of the automotive industry with its commendable progress of shifting towards electric power. Besides its experiments with different forms of car ownership, the innovators have introduced us to Geely, Haval, and BYD.
However, the Chinese automakers are significantly weak in terms of their export, giving a chance to rivals in Japan to strengthen their positions before the Chinese automakers hit the major export markets.
Talking of the MDB or model-based development, it is an innovation for automakers as it implies the development of vehicle design using virtual models. This way, the entire operations of the automobile will be based on computers, thereby, eliminating the need for actual prototype parts.
This way, the automaker won’t have to design physical parts before actual assembly and fabrication. As a result, both parts manufacturers and automakers will be saving a considerable amount of time and money.
As per the official statement, JAMBE is said to create the “most-advanced development community in the mobility sector, able to carry out optimal and high-grade monozukuri more efficiently”.
Further, when Nikkei Asia interviewed Mitsuo Hitomi, senior innovation fellow at Mazda, he commented, “We don’t have the luxury of spending time to iron out differences between vehicle and parts makers.” He further added, “We will improve efficiency where we can so that we can focus on investing in such areas as environmental technologies,”
Lastly, the JAMBE team seems all set to innovate the evolution of automobile manufacturing!
