Mercedes-Benz adds pothole detection tech to Car-to-X system

Mercedes-Benz has expanded the capability of its Car-to-X communication. The updated functionality now allows its cars to share similar communication systems, sharing information on the road hazards they’ve traveled.

As per the announcement, the automaker has selected models like the S-Class, updated C-Class, and the electric EQS to use the functionality. With the updated functionality, the selective cars now have the ability to detect speed bumps and potholes.

Enabled through the chassis support of the vehicle, it works in a totally seamless manner. To explain you better, here’s an example: Let’s say a chassis-control unit has registered one such incident and the car’s Car-to-X communication functionality becomes completely activated. In that case, the vehicle sends that information to the Mercedes-Benz Cloud database, using a mobile phone network in real-time.

Talking about the Car-to-X communication’ functionality, the vehicle feature is a great explanation of connected technology between two vehicles. Using the X-communication functionality, the Mercedes brand vehicle gets the ability to share relevant data between drivers, updating them about the traffic conditions, hazards, and diversions among other hindrances on the road.

The information from one vehicle to another is communicated through the display of the vehicle. Further, the display also highlights all the latest events in the vicinity where the car is traveling through. These incidents are highlighted via icons on the navigation map.

In order to activate the Car-to-X service, users of the compatible models mentioned above, need to connect their vehicles via a Mercedes me connect account, with the service subscribed and activated by the platform.

Lastly, the automaker suggests that this will be a paid service after the first three years of the free trial. The users can either activate or deactivate it through their Mercedes me portal or the mobile app.
