Mercedes teases Vision AMG EV Concept; car to preview brand’s EV future

A new Vision AMG concept car, set to be unveiled next week, will showcase Mercedes' all-electric future for the performance division AMG. An initial teaser image gives a glimpse of how the new model will appear. As Mercedes COE Ola Kallenius explained at the Financial Times Future of the Car Summit, the concept points to the debut of a bespoke flagship AMG during the second half of the decade.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • When will the new Mercedes-Benz Vision AMG EV Performance Concept unviel?

The new Mercedes-Benz concept will debut on May 19.
  • When will production began for the Vision AMG EV Concept?

The Vision AMG is expected to make its production-spec debut in 2025.
  • Mercedes design boss Gorden Wagener's Instagram post shows an aerodynamic, low-profile profile with powerful haunches that hints at a classic coupe profile. Mercedes Vision AMG, as Wagener was referring to it in the same post, may follow the design language of the Mercedes Vision EQXX concept, which recently completed a 626-mile journey on a single charge.

All-electric versions of the SLS gullwing-doored grand tourer - a conversion of the 6.3-litre V8 version - and a new EQS limousine have already been rolled out. By being a standalone car and electric from the ground up, Vision AMG will take a step away from these models.

“Next week, we will show what we think the electric performance world will look like when it’s made by AMG,” revealed Ola Kallenius. “That’s hot off the press for you today, so stay tuned for some announcements that we will make next week. We will give you a glimpse of AMG performance as all-electric.”

Kallenius elaborated that the car would use “a fully dedicated electric architecture from the ground up” as he hinted at its flagship status within the AMG division. We, however, still await more technical details.

As part of Mercedes' wider electrification strategy, the Vision AMG will be a key component. Starting in 2025, Mercedes-Benz will only develop vehicles on three electric car platforms. While the MB.EA will cover medium to large passenger cars, the VAN.EA platform will take care of the commercial vehicles. Lastly, the Mercedes-AMG concept is expected to benefit from the AMG.EA platform, which has been planned for high-performance EVs.
