New and more strict emission norms announced for motorcycles in Singapore

Singapore is one country that is majorly focused on renewed growth over the years. Also, this ASEAN country adheres to its Homeland laws very firmly. Known to introduce reforms that help serve nature better, the country, in its most recent updates, has enabled more strict emission regulations for motorcycles.

Effective from 6th April 2023, the National Environment Agency (NEA) will tighten the current emission standards for local motorcycles that were registered before 1 July 2003.

The latest announcement around the emission norms is the country’s take in reducing vehicular emissions and improving air quality. Further, NEA also said that "these motorcycles can continue to be used until Jun 30, 2028, as long as they meet the tightened in-use emission standards."

On the other hand, the motorcycles that were registered after July 1, 2003, already align with the latest emission policy, saving them from any chances of degrading the current air quality. Furthermore, similar rules apply to foreign motorcycles coming in or passing by the country.

In their official statement, NEA said, “This is similar to current rules requiring foreign motorcycles to adhere to the same exhaust noise limit as local motorcycles, and not to emit any smoke or visible vapor."

However, that’s not the end as the motorcycles registered prior to July 1, 2023, are said to be completely restricted from running on the roads after June 30, 2028. Although, owners will be allowed to retain their beloved vehicle as a classic motorcycle.

“Owners of affected motorcycles are reminded to get their vehicles serviced and inspected to meet the tightened emission standards. Such inspections are available at VICOM Inspection Centre, JIC Inspection Services, and STA Vehicle Inspection.”

Lastly, the official statement reads, "NEA is exploring a temporary scheme which would allow local motorcycles that were first registered between Jul 2, 1993, and Jun 30, 2003, to be retained after Jun 30, 2028, until such time when they are eligible for the Classic Vehicle Scheme."
