Toyota bZ4X unveiled, will go on sale in mid-2022
Toyota’s first all-electric vehicle, the bZ4X, is finally here. It is an electric crossover, which is based on an all-new dedicated battery-electric platform co-developed with Subaru. The Toyota bZ4X is the first model in the bZ series of all-electric vehicles from Toyota and will be officially on sale worldwide from mid-2022.
The Toyota bZ4X has a length of 4,690 mm, a width of 1,860 mm, a height of 1,650 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. While the FWD weighs 1,920 kg, the AWD version tips the weighing scales at 2,005 kg. For safety from even the most gruelling of collisions, the Toyota bZ4X has an omnidirectional crash response structure, where the battery unit is placed in a compartment that has cross members for crash energy absorption.
On the inside, the new Toyota bZ4X gets a very uniquely designed aircraft steering yoke-inspired steering wheel, which gets steering-by-wire technology. The steering feel can be changed as per different drive modes on offer. The electric crossover also gets Subaru’s X-Mode with grip control for enhanced stability and traction over surfaces with loose traction. Other prominent features of the car include a high-placed hexagonal full-TFT instrument console, a large rectangular touchscreen infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, and a flat floor at the back.
The Toyota bZ4X has been showcased with two drivetrain formats – front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), both of which get a 71.4 kWh electric battery as standard. This battery can be charged using up to 6.6 kW of AC charging and 150 kW of DC charging. While the single motor in the FWD setup produces 204 PS, the dual battery setup in the AWD version produces a combined power output of 218 PS. In terms of performance, while the FWD version takes 8.4 seconds for a 0-100 kmph sprint, the same is done by the AWD version in 7.7 seconds.
The Toyota bZ4X also has a DC external power supply function, which can give high-output electricity to homes and for outdoor activities. This system can also be used for charging the Toyota bZ4X with the possibility of using solar-generated electricity from homes.
