2021 Lexus IS arrives in Japan with a comprehensive makeover

Continuing its world tour, the 2021 Lexus IS has finally made its arrival in Japan. Although the automaker brought it back with its third-generation design, the latest compact executive sedan has been revamped on the outside and the inside as well. 

Lexus’s approach to the sedan is seemingly new as it ditches the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) on which the recent Lexus and Toyota models are based. The new Lexus IS drives over the "New N" platform, following the current 2020 model. 

Talking about the revised exterior of the car, the 2021 IS boasts a larger front grille that covers up a broader section in the front. The front of the car can also be seen with the all-new "Cross-Hatch" insert. The newly designed LED DRLs are now re-designed. Moreover, the car’s bumpers also seem to be re-designed with new air curtains. 

Moving to its sides, the front and rear doors of the car get a "Scalloped" design and the new aluminum-alloy wheel enhances the overall premium look of the car. The rear of the car also flaunts a new rear tail lamp design, which is now full LED.

Engine options for the car remain unchanged. The IS 300 houses the similar 8AR-FTS 2.0L turbocharged engine that churns out 243 hp of power besides 350 Nm of peak torque. The second option is a 2GR-FSE 3.5L naturally-aspirated V6 that can be availed with the IS 350 churns out 315 hp of power besides giving out 380 Nm of peak torque.

In Japan, all the variants of the IS come mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox; however, the IS 300 comes with an improved transmission shift tuning. Buyers also get the option to buy the IS 300h hybrid that gives out a combined output of 175 hp/221 Nm. Lastly, the sedan received a revamped suspension that has new swing valve dampers.
