Lyft App will have autonomous Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric cars by 2023
Hyundai’s advanced EV, the Ioniq 5 is expected to be ditching the driver for an autonomous driving experience by 2023. The car is being trialed as an autonomous driving taxi, via the Lyft application. The autonomous vehicle that is still under development, will be based on the recently-announced Ioniq 5 EV.
Further, the upcoming autonomous driving technology is going to be a result of the collaboration between Aptiv and Hyundai, which goes by the name Motional. The joint venture will be providing the Ioniq 5 with the latest software and hardware, required for Level 4 autonomous driving. The tech features of the car will be including radar, lidar, a number of cameras for a 360-degree field of vision, as per reports by TechCrunch.
Talking of the most obvious differences, the upcoming autonomous car is certainly going to stand out from its siblings that arrive at the dealerships for everyone else to buy.
The interior space of the upcoming automated taxi will be similar to the models that are present to be used by the consumer, paired with some additional features that will represent the robotaxi operations. However, Motional refused to share any details on whether or not the vehicle will be accompanied by a steering wheel.
Interestingly, Motional has already begun commencing the tests for the trial run of the robotaxi. These upcoming units have already highlighted test units for trial running on closed courses and public roads. However, the car is still left with months, or rather, years of testing before it finally collects all the real-world data and integrates it to the Lyft platform.
Lastly, as per reports by TechCrunch, the automaker is expected to make its offering public, only once it is assured of the testing process and is confident that its robtaxis are safer than human drivers.
