Next-gen Toyota Prius set to enter the markets in 2022

Toyota Prius has long been one of the brand's most iconic and prevalent cars. Following its success, Toyota is now all set to launch the fifth generation of its chart-topper in 2022, as reported by Autocar.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Will there be a fifth-gen Toyota Prius?

As per a recent report, Toyota Prius will return for a fifth generation in 2022.
  • Given that the existing fourth generation of the Toyota Prius has been around since 2015 chances are that the latest model will come with enhanced features revamped styling.

According to the director of marketing and product development at Toyota Motor Europe, Andreas Carlcucci, "it remains the pioneer into electrification – and has been clearly, for Toyota, an icon. It started our journey back more than 25 years ago." He further added, "It has to keep a role, and we have to make sure it will always be a frontrunner with that kind of technology, so – although I can't disclose much – we don't want to waste our icon, even for the future."

While he did not reveal much about the upcoming Prius, he did mention that the hybrid powertrains will still remain an important aspect of the electrification strategy adopted by Toyota.

He added, "When we look at Europe, we define a region where we might have an acceleration; but globally, as we try to demonstrate the different solutions, we still have a centre of gravity around the hybrid. So, the Prius remains clearly iconic and stands for what we are: hybrid and a leader in electrification."

Hence it seems that even though the brand will continue its expansion towards electric vehicles infrastructure by coming up with new and more efficient electric vehicles, the full hybrid powertrains will still remain viable in the near future.

One thing is certain that Toyota is very committed to developing new platforms, especially in places like Europe, to be used as an underpinning for purely electric variants, hybrids, and even plug-in hybrids.

Lastly, chances are that the latest infrastructure will leverage different elements from the existing e-TNGA and TNGA-C platforms, as the sources suggest that Toyota will introduce the second generation C-HR before the latest Prius hits the market.
