Porsche plans to develop a new EV battery plant in Germany

Similar to all the other automakers rushing towards the world of EV, in a rather sense of emergency, Porsche has also taken steps to highlight the sense of urgency and competition. The automaker has decided to develop an EV battery plant, right at the home of the brand in Southern Germany.

As per reports around the development of the new EV battery plant, the upcoming Porsche factory will be similar to all the other ones being developed by the parent company Volkswagen Group. Previously reported by Reuters, and later confirmed by the CEO himself, Porsche is all set to buy the new batteries from Volkswagen to power their EVs.

As per Porsche CEO, Oliver Blume, “Battery cells are a key technology for Germany's automobile industry which we must also have in our own country." Further, he also added that the carmaker expects to set up a pioneering role and take the lead in the step. The site that is selected for the factory development will be the Swabian town of Tuebingen.

Previously, giving a hint on the upcoming stint, Blume commented on the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, that batteries are going to be the key to moving Germany towards a greener automobile industry. This way, the CEO also expects a better future for the country.

Currently, the automaker is said to source the battery of its Taycan model from the German supplier Dräxlmaier, which is located near Stuttgart. Interestingly, Dräxlmaier’s customer base is not only limited to Porsche but also supplied batteries to Jaguar, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Maserati, MINI, and Volkswagen.

Lastly, Blume concluded the meeting by saying “But there will also be a segment for high-performance battery cells.”. The CEO also added, “It’s a Porsche domain. Just as we developed high-performance internal combustion engines, we now want to be at the forefront of high-performance batteries.”

Lastly, the upcoming battery plant is said to be a plan of half a dozen battery cell plants across Europe.
