Volvo will give ‘emotional’ names to its upcoming EVs

Volvo will give ‘emotional’ names to its upcoming EVs

With numerous automakers continuing to name their offerings after nomenclatures, Volvo continues to build its USP around a totally different matter. The automaker takes an opposite direction with the names of its future models.

During its Tech Moment presentation earlier this month, the automaker revealed its Concept Recharge model. It also confirmed that the company would diverge from the long-running nomenclatures by adopting the emotional names.

The plan suggests that Volvo will be ditching its S, XC, and V alphanumeric naming and resonate to “proper” monikers for its future EV models. Further, news from Autocar suggests that the president and CEO Håkan Samuelsson also provided the users with an explanation for the move.

Speaking to the publication, he said that Volvo wanted to take a different turn when it came to naming their offerings. “If you look at cars today, all of them are very ‘engineeredly’ named: XC, T8, all-wheel drive, double overhead cams. It’s all specification on the rear of many cars,” said Samuelsson.

“We’re talking about a totally new architecture, a new generation of born-electric, all-electric cars with central computing. It’s good and clear to mark that this is a new beginning, and that’s why we’re not going to have numbers and letters, an engineering type of name. We’re going to give them a name as you give a newborn child a name.”

Further, Volvo’s boss also suggested that they are yet to finalize the names of their upcoming offerings, and he also suggested that “a very interesting and creative discussion” is still ongoing.

Talking about the automaker’s latest release, in addition to more emotional names to its upcoming offerings, the upcoming flagship model will also highlight a cleaner, new design language, as it was highlighted in the Concept Recharge variant.

Lastly, with its latest electric architecture designed to release constraints from the traditional internal combustion engine, Volvo has promised a sleeker profile for its future models.
