2021 Toyota Hilux GR Sport high-rider and low-rider launched in Thailand

Toyota has been actively expanding its GR Sport in various countries, including the Southeast Asia region. The line of cars already has its existence in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. Now, the Hilux GR Sport has made its way to Thailand in both high- as well as low-rider versions.

The Toyota Hilux GR Sport high-rider gets a few body coloured elements, like the Rocco’s body cladding, grille, and the overfenders. Apart from this, there are red and black colour trims added to the sides and the tailgate, which seems to be an inspiration from the Toyota Gazoo Racing cars.

The front grille on this new high-rider Hilux reflects a lot of similarities as the Land Cruiser GR Sport. The pickup rides on 18-inch two-tone split-six alloy wheels, while the fog lamps up front are surrounded by glossy black inserts.

On the contrary, the low-rider version is done in sportier bodywork. The design draws inspiration from the Super GT cars and is closer to the Z Edition. It runs on 17-inch alloy wheels with silver rims. There are skirts at the side profile, and the rear gets a diffuser-like bumper. There are some fake ram air intake vents at the front and a different body graphic, making it distinct from the high-rider version.

As for the mechanical aspect, both the high-rider and low-rider Toyota Hilux GR Sport get the same 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV engine that can produce up to 204 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. The choice of engine is interesting from Toyota since the previous low-rider model had a down-sized engine on duty.

The low-rider version, however, is still slightly inferior to its bigger sibling. While both the versions have a 6-speed automatic transmission as standard, the low-rider gets an RWD drivetrain, while the high-rider dons the 4WD.

Inside the cabin, both the high- and low-rider models get certain standard fitments, like leather and suede upholstery in black, alloy pedals, embroidered GR logo, and a leather-stitched steering wheel.

Considering the surge in popularity of pickup trucks in the Thai market, these trucks are locally developed and are offered in double cab variants. Prices start from 889,000 baht (SGD 36,755) for the low-rider, while high-ride gets a 1,299,000 baht (SGD 53706) price tag.
