Audi unveils Urbanspere Concept, a luxury electric MPV for China

With a vision for a self-driving e-mobility future, Audi has unveiled its Urbansphere EV concept, which joins the Audi Grandsphere sedan and Skysphere coupe concept in Audi’s plans for the near future.

    “Systematically designed from the inside out, Audi has unveiled plans for the Audi Urbansphere Concept car. Designers and engineers initially created the Audi Urbansphere for use in traffic-dense Chinese megacities, although the concept is also suitable for any other metropolitan centre in the world. In these urban areas, where personal space is in particularly short supply, the concept car offers the largest interior space of any Audi to date. It intelligently coordinates this with technologies and digital services that appeal to all the senses and offer a whole new level of experience,” Audi said in a press release.

    Audi Urbansphere EV features

    The Audi Urbanspere concept stands 5,500mm long, over 2,000mm wide, and 1,780mm tall. A big single-frame grille lying behind the digital lightning surface dominates the front fascia of the Audi Urbansphere. Moreover, a three-dimensional lightning arrangement is offered by the aluminium-finished upper and lower edges of the grille, along with the vertical connections formed by the LEDs.

    Reports suggest that the Audi Urbansphere EV will offer the most spacious cabin on an Audi, thanks to the 3,400mm long wheelbase. With a curvy mini-van design, the Urbansphere EV concept gets two-row seating and suicide doors, which all allow for a humungous headroom and knee room.

    On the inside, the centre console amidst the seats gets glasses as well as a water dispenser. In the front, there is a neatly integrated OLED transparent touch screen, which is positioned vertically from the roof in the zone in between the seat rows. Audi calls this screen the ‘cinema screen’.

    As for the power and performance, the Audi Urbansphere EV concept gets two electric motors and a 129kWh battery. The motors generate a maximum power output of 395hp and a peak torque of 690Nm. The driving range on a single-charge is claimed to be 300km.
