BMW i7 heavy acoustic testing underway
BMW has been focusing greatly on fine-tuning every aspect of its upcoming vehicle, the i7, internally codenamed as the G70. The German automaker recently released a few fresh pictures of the electric vehicle that depict the company’s focus on the acoustic tuning of the vehicle.
From what we can see, BMW puts a lot of effort into ensuring that its customers are saved from various vibrations and disturbing noises that any car can possess. Their engineers at the car’s Research and Innovation Center in Munich delve deep into the car’s various sounds.
Engineers are trying to recreate the various noises they have heard during test drives. It can help them pinpoint the source of these sounds and eliminate them one by one. They use powerful roller dynamometers with an interchangeable surface covering and individual quiescent levels to validate and measure every possible sound emitted by the i7.
Moreover, engineers will also be using an acoustic wind tunnel to check any noise from the wind blowing over the i7’s body. They have already implemented a nearly closed underbody, aerodynamically optimized side mirrors, flush-integrated door handles, and a clear-cut body surface to ensure better efficiency and acoustics.
The i7’s ventilation system and air conditioning acoustics are also getting checked. Engineers are making sure that there are better acoustics at very high and very low-level temperatures. Not just that, the i7 will also receive increased body rigidity on the front-end tyres, complete with a foam absorber on the inside. It will ensure maximum vibration and acoustic comfort for the driver.
The G70’s electric motors, too, will receive a good acoustic optimization to reduce noise. In addition, it will receive new noise encapsulation serving for maximum acoustic decoupling. This way, the BMW IconicSounds Electric sound generator system gets to shine, and drivers get to enjoy the peaceful silence.
BMW also reported that it is not just the i7 that will receive such heavy checking. All future 7 series vehicles will undergo strict testing to ensure maximum drive quality and comfort for customers.
