Ford teases new electric Tourneo Custom; slated for 2023 release in Europe
In February last year, Ford had made an announcement to go electric-only with all its passenger cars by the end of this decade in Europe. Following that, the commercial wing of the automobile brand has signalled the launch of a zero-emissions EV and initial reports suggest that it is a Tourneo Custom.
While details are yet to be revealed, it is set for a May 9 launch and is expected to go on sale in Europe in 2023. In their announcement earlier, they had mentioned that by 2030, PHEVs and EVs would account for two-thirds of their commercial sales and the teaser seems to be geared that way.
Earlier, announcements had stated that among the PHEVs would be the Mustang Mach-E joined by an electric Puma crossover and "medium-size" and "sport” crossovers in the next few years, while the commercial lineup would include Transit Courier, Tourneo Courier, Transit Custom, Tourneo Custom, and E-Transit.
Hence, the teased Tourneo Custom EV would enter production in a similar manner to the E-Transit, which was launched last month. Next year is also marked to see the launch of the Transit Custom, with the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier heading for a 2024 launch.
There are a few differences, though. Internal combustion engines are expected to be used for the Tourneo Custom, unlike the upcoming EVs that have Volkswagen’s MEB platform.
By 2035, Ford aims to sell only electric passenger and commercial vehicles in Europe and do away with the combustion engines altogether to achieve the required carbon neutrality in its factories.
