Hyundai plans to recall Kona EV in Korea due to faulty brakes
Hyundai Motor Co is planning to recall a total of 50,864 Kona EVs along with Nexo fuel-cell SUVs in South Korea. According to the transport ministry, the carmaker took this decision due to the faulty electronic braking systems.
According to Reuters, the braking systems may not work effectively because of software defects. However, they did not mention if the latter would lead to any accidents. Moreover, it is not obvious if the brand’s decision to recall would influence other markets.
As we all know that Kona Electric is one of the best-selling electric cars in Europe, with sales outside the home market accounting for more than three-quarters of the total sales. South Korea's recall will include nearly 40,000 Kona battery and hybrid electric vehicles that were manufactured between May 2019 and November 2020, followed by 10,138 Nexo fuel-cell SUVs produced between January 2018 and November 2020.
In addition to that, the Japanese carmaker is recalling somewhere around 74,000 of its Kona EVs worldwide after more than a dozen cars caught fire in Canada, Korea, and Europe over two years. The transport ministry revealed that Affiliate Kia Motors is also preparing to recall an extra 1,895 Soul electric cars due to a related problem.
Recently, Hyundai Motor India has also issued a similar recall for the Kona Electric SUV to inspect the vehicle's battery management system (BMS). The recall concerned around 456 Hyundai Kona EVs produced between April 1, 2019, and October 31, 2020. The recall included an inspection of possible electrical defects in the vehicle's high-voltage battery system.
