Subaru confirms a new EV for the European market

The Japanese automaker Subaru has confirmed its plans to launch a fully electric vehicle in the beginning half of the decade in Europe, which will feature a similar size to that of the Forester. According to the sources, the EV will be based on a new platform that would be shared with Toyota.

In the year 2019, Toyota and Subaru had declared that they will be jointly designing a new EV platform for both brands. Also, the platform would be specifically for "mid-size and large passenger vehicles," and will underpin both sedans and SUVs. It seems that the time has finally come as they have already come up with the e-TNGA platform.

We can anticipate Subaru’s next step, which has been a smattering of e-Boxer mild hybrids for the prime models such as the XV, Forester, and Impreza. The Japanese carmaker has stated that further technical information regarding the eclectic vehicle will be revealed next year.

The carmaker also stated that they are aiming for a long-term target of around 40 percent of the total global sales coming from hybrid or electric models by the year 2030. Both companies have earlier planned to jointly work on a dedicated platform for EVs of various sizes, which includes SUVs, C and D segment sedans.

According to the joint deal, they will be developing a C-segment electric SUV for each brand. The platform would exploit Subaru's expertise in all-wheel drive and Toyota's background in electrification.

Toyota afterward gave a piece of brief information about the e-TNGA platform, it is basically a modular foundation that will develop the heart of the “Toyobaru electric SUV”. Along with that, it will work as a base for Toyota D-segment SUV, C-segment crossover,  C-segment sedan, and C-segment minivan.

It can be viewed as Toyota’s version of Volkswagen’s MEB electric architecture. Toyota has teased the first model, which will be based on the e-TNGA and will be further showcased in the upcoming months.
