Subaru drops WRX STI plans, says it doesn’t make sense anymore
The entirety of the performance world in automobile space was expecting a new WRX STI ever since the new WRX broke cover. The Japanese automaker, however, has broken many hearts saying it won’t be launching the STI model this time around and blamed a shorter shelf life and changing regulations for the decision. "A next-generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform,” Subaru said, adding it is now exploring opportunities for the next-gen STI that included electrification.

When will Subaru launch the next-gen Subaru WRX STI?
Subaru has broken many hearts saying it won’t be launching the WRX STI model this time around and blamed a shorter shelf life and changing regulations for the decision.“If we designed a new STI now, it would have a very limited shelf life. The regulations are changing so quickly that it kind of wouldn’t make any sense,” Subaru Director of Corporate Communications Dominick Infante said. Subaru may have a cause to be wary of putting its flagship performance vehicle on the line without knowing what the future holds. After all, the business is just getting ready to launch its first totally electric vehicle with Toyota's aid. Subaru has a lot on its plate, but the STI moniker will live on.
"The STI brand still exists," Infante stated, pointing out that Subaru launched the STI E-RA concept in Tokyo earlier this year. Some Japanese domestic market cars, such as the Levorg STI Sport, also have the designation. The WRX STI is the only model that has been put on hold for this generation. Infante was unable to predict when the next STI would arrive. When it comes, though, it will not be built on this generation of WRX. The previous model of the WRX was on the market for seven years, but Infante said that compliance for a lower-output car is generally simpler, making a shorter lifespan easier to justify. We will have to wait for more information from Subaru but expect the STI to return with hybrid or EV power at some point.
Besides, the current-generation WRX made its debut in September 2021 with a turbocharged 2.4-litre motor that produces 271 hp of maximum power. Also, it’s a proper traditional ICE car with no hybrid assist on offer.
