Toyota Hilux GR Sport gets a more powerful engine in South Africa

Toyota’s Hilux range has always been a fan favorite in the automobile market across the globe, thanks to its functionality and affordability. And now, the South African market will receive a pickup truck from this range known as the Toyota Hilux GR Sport. So let’s check out what the African variant has to offer.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What will be the output levels of the South African Toyota Hilux GR Sport?

The new turbodiesel 2.8L engine of the South African Toyota Hilux GR Sport will have a power output of 165 kW and a maximum torque of 550 Nm.
  • Now, as we know, other countries like Japan, Thailand, and Europe have already received Hilux GR Sport pickups. For now, South Africa will be receiving this new variant in 2022.

The most interesting aspect about the upcoming Toyota Hilux GR Sport is its new engine. The new turbo diesel 2.8L engine will have a power output of 165 kW and a maximum torque of 550 Nm. The latest numbers are much higher than its European and Thai variants that deliver a power output of 150 kW and a peak torque of 500 Nm.

Leon Theron, Senior VP of sales for TSAM (Toyota South Africa Motors), said that the other aspects would remain more or less similar. For now, they have mainly focused on improved power output since customers are looking for it.

As reported by The Citizen, the South African variant will receive wheels similar to the European variant but with a darker finish. It will also receive a new sports bar for the rear cargo area. The rest will remain the same, like the black exterior mirror covers and the GR Sport badging.

Also, the upcoming pickup will have a similar dual-cab look with new black over fenders. The simple Toyota script will remain in the same position - on the angular grille frame.

The Toyota Hilux GR Sport is set to grace the South African market by May 2022. It will be when a complete photo gallery and full details, including the price details, will be revealed. However, we do not know whether this variant will be exclusively for South Africa or if it will be introduced in other countries.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned for more updates!
