Volkswagen commences production of ID.4 all-electric SUV

The German automaker Volkswagen has recently declared the commencement of the production of its all-electric SUV named ID.4 at its Zwickau plant located in Germany. The SUV is based on the ID Crozz concept, which was displayed at the Auto Expo 2020. When it comes to the brand’s new ID label, the all-electric SUV is the first to be headed to the US.

The series production was kicked off on 20th August, way ahead of the SUV’s world premiere which is slated to occur in September. Ralf Brandstatter, the chief operating officer of the brand, was present in the plant in order to observe the vehicles hit the production line. After ID 3 hatchback, the new SUV is the second model that is built on the brand’s popular MEB electric platform.

According to the sources, the e-SUV will also be built at VW plants located in China and the USA. There were some undisguised images and dimensions details exposed from the leaked brand’s filings to MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology). If we compare the vehicle with Volkswagen Tiguan, it is slightly larger as it measures 4,592 mm long, 1,629 mm high, and 1,852 mm wide. Moreover, it flaunts a wheelbase of 2,765 mm.

The concept model of the ID.4 that was showcased in February came equipped with an 83 kWh lithium-ion battery. Along with that, it boasts two electric motors. One is capable of churning out 102 hp of maximum power and 140 Nm of peak torque to the front wheel and the other one generates 204 hp and 310 Nm.

Combing the figures, the SUV could put out 306 hp of power and 450 Nm of torque. The German automaker claimed a range of 500 km on a single charge. The top speed of the vehicle is limited to 180 kmph. We can expect this powertrain on higher trim. The base model will be limited to rear-wheel-drive only. In addition to that, the fast charger will allow the battery to hit an 80 percent charge in just 30 minutes.
