Volkswagen could develop an electric pickup next
With an aim to add over '75 pure electric models' by 2029, Volkswagen is set to put its root deeper into electrification. Volkswagen America COO Johan de Nysschen has affirmed that electrification "could represent an opportunity" for the brand, and rumours suggest that the brand's next offering will be a pure electric pickup truck.
In a recent interview with Autoblog, Thomas Ulbrich, a member of VW's electric mobility team, laid out the company's EV efforts. The statement made a direct reference to the Amarok pickup truck. The truck is the result of a partnership between VW and Ford that commenced in the year 2019.
The agreement also laid a clause of supplying Volkswagen with a second-generation Amarok. The truck's diesel engine offering comes in a 2.0L and 3.0L variants, giving out 177 hp and 254 hp of power, respectively. Currently, VW Groups might be announcing a refreshed lineup of 60 hybrids alongside its EV.
Interestingly, as a dedicated step for their future in electrification, Volkswagen AG's Traton truck division will be spending over $2.2 billion. The plan is to spend the funds over a period of five years on the electrification of their vehicles and digital offering.
Earlier this year, Volkswagen also teased the possibilities of offering pickup trucks for America. The brand had put out their 'Tanoak' concept on display. The truck was an adaptation from the Atlas SUV.
Some other interesting concepts from the automaker is the ID concept. The concept vehicle made its debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. Presenting similar styling cues as the T1 and T2 Microbus models, the vehicle will be functioning over VW's multi-purpose electric-vehicle platform.
Driving the upcoming concept vehicle will be the awaited MEB platform. Volkswagen expects the car to be covering a distance of 270 miles (as per American EV-range measurements). With an electric motor at each axle, it packs an estimated 369 hp, hitting a top speed of 100km per hour at 5.0 seconds.
