Volkswagen plans to set another Wolfsburg factory to build its upcoming EV

The German automaker Volkswagen has recently revealed its intention to construct a new manufacturing plant. It is surmised that they are planning to build the plant right beside their existing facility in Wolfsburg, Germany, near its headquarters. They also made it apparent that this plant will carry out the Trinity sedan production process, which is set to launch in 2026.

Considering and witnessing the efforts of the German auto giant, there is no doubt the Trinity is their next big project. Advertised as Project Trinity in March this year, the forthcoming fastback sedan has been so-named by the brand based on its three crucial components associated with it, which are:

  • A transparent supply structure
  • A new electronics platform and software; and
  • A completely-networked smart production process at the production facility

The brand imitated that building a new manufacturing unit would be more cost-effective than repurposing the existing plant. They asserted the talk by showing their aim to produce electric vehicles in a short period.

Volkswagen indicated that they strived to have a composition time of 10 hours per vehicle, or similar to the time necessitated for a Tesla Model 3 to be assembled at its plant in Grünheide, Germany.

Besides cost, the motive to build an all-new plant was not limited by the constraints of the older Wolfsburg facility, which would have been created due to the construction of an all-new production unit as it signifies the probabilities for radical changes to the manufacturing process.

Showcasing their intent to switch over to more efficient greenfield construction, the Volkswagen brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter concluded in a statement.

It is surmised that the new production unit would have an annual capacity of 250,000 cars, in addition to the existing yearly production of 500,000 vehicles in the Wolfsburg plant.

Despite all the spiced-up info, no cost estimates have been revealed for the second plant. It is also proclaimed that despite the endorsement of the planned site by the Volkswagen work council, the brand is yet to receive approval from the automaker's supervisory board,  as reported by Autocar.
