Subaru BRZ

The interior cabin of the Subaru BRZ looks terribly dated for a car of this day and age. While there are some modern features in the cabin which do try to act as grace savior, the fact that the layout has remained unchanged all these years ever since its inception back in 2012 makes it look too old now.

The oldest looking part of the cabin happens to be the driver’s cockpit, which gets an old school looking combination of a three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel as well as the staid instrument console. The center console, with its wide design, tries to make the cabin look a bit rich, with its almost vertical layout having curved AC vents at the top and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system just below it which gets piano black surrounds.

The automatic climate control cluster, traction control switches and push start-stop button are placed in its lower part, which does get vertical silver-finished pillar-like garnish on either side. The cabin does get few more basic amenities in the form of a dual-zone automatic climate control system, aluminium pedals, tilt and telescopic adjustable steering and cruise control.

The Subaru BRZ, being based on the Toyota 86, looks exactly the same as the latter – save for the badges, there is literally nothing which differentiates both the cars. The Subaru BRZ might not look too futuristic as some of the new age sports cars, but then, it surely has got a smart road presence with its traditional coupe-like flamboyance. 

The frontal design of the Subaru BRZ looks clean and minimalist with its eyebrow-shaped headlamps and a wide hexagonal lower air dam, the latter of which is placed on the front bumper. The slats of the air dam are extended on the fog lamp housings as well, which look cool with the additional carved design of the front bumper besides the fog lamps.

The side profile of the Subaru BRZ looks nice with the smooth contours emerging from the front fender blending seamlessly with a thin crease just below the curved window line. Apart from these bits, the side profile of the Subaru BRZ looks clean and simple, with the door-mounted rearview mirrors, two-door profile and large 20-inch machined alloy wheels stealing the limelight here.

At the back, the sloping coupe-like roofline flows downwards towards the boot lid, at the top of which is mounted a long wing-like spoiler. The recessed design for the LED tail lamps, which have rounded outer edges, makes the rear of the Subaru BRZ look wide and gives it a hunkered stance.

The Subaru BRZ impresses with its fine driving mannerisms, with a stiff suspension setup of Macpherson struts at the front and double wishbone at the rear. The chassis of the Subaru BRZ gets further assistances of the limited-slip differential as well as vehicle stability control with track mode for that fine sporty character people expect from a sports coupe.

The Subaru BRZ has been plonked with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine under its bonnet, which has been offered with both the options of a 6-speed manual as well as a 6-speed automatic gearbox. With both the transmission options, the engine in the Subaru BRZ can produce a maximum power output of 200 PS and a peak torque output of 205 Nm.

The Subaru BRZ gets only the basic essentials of safety equipment in the form of the front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, reverse parking sensors and rear camera.

The Subaru BRZ needs a serious upgrade now in terms of electronic driving aids, comfort and convenience features and a fresher looking cabin. However, what it still manages to impress with is that lovable coupe-like design and the unadulterated performance from the engine.
