BMW introduces the world’s first-ever sustainable tyres
The BMW Group has marked its place as the world’s first automaker that will be using sustainable tyres in its cars. The vehicles, beginning from the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-in-Hybrid units that will be produced in August, will be using tyres that are developed from certified sustainable natural rubber and rayon.
The movement of integrating their offerings with the latest sustainable tyres is a move to step up the automaker’s activities in the field of sustainability. Talking of the tyremaker, Pirelli is the one such manufacturer who has achieved such a stint. The company will obtain 22-inch tyres from the manufacturer and pair them with a wood-based material to strengthen the wheels.
In a statement, BMW AG Purchasing and Supplier Network Board of Management Member Dr. Andreas Wendt explained, “As a premium manufacturer, we aspire to lead the way in sustainability and take responsibility. We have been committed to improving the cultivation of natural rubber and increasing transparency in the supplier network since 2015. The use of tyres made of certified natural rubber is a pioneering achievement for our industry. In this way, we are helping preserve biodiversity and forests to counteract climate change.”
These new 22-inch P ZERO tyres are also the first in the world to receive the FSC label. The FSC is an independent organization that ensures the quality of tyres manufacturing by providing them with a certification standard that these are developed from natural rubber.
To obtain the FSC certification, the tyre manufacturer adapted its US plants to produce products using FSC-certified natural rubber and rayon. To achieve their coveted FSC certification, Pirelli revised operations on the plant in Rome, Georgia to craft the 22-inch P Zero tyres.
Talking of their challenges in the road to create sustainable tyres, “Before even reaching the road, sustainable mobility begins with raw materials. With the world’s first FSC-certified tyre, Pirelli once again demonstrates its commitment to pursuing increasingly challenging goals in terms of sustainability, a testament to the constant work on innovative materials and increasingly cutting-edge production processes. We continue to invest in sustainable growth for our planet, aware that this is also essential for the future of our businesses.”
Lastly, with a new generation of tyres stepping in, it will only be a matter of years to witness some other sustainable processes taking over.
