Volkswagen’s upcoming crossover to be called ‘Taos’
The upcoming VW crossover that had generated quite a buzz after the release of its teaser images will be called the ‘Taos.’ Named after a small town in Mexico, the car will be sold below the Tiguan SUV in VW US lineup. The automaker claims that the car has been designed, keeping the North American market in mind.
The upcoming VW Taos is set to make its debut next month and will be available in the US by early 2021. It is expected to be 10 inches shorter than the Tiguan and the plans of its arrival can be traced back to 2019 when Volkswagen came up with an idea to introduce a small crossover in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Exclaiming his excitement on the upcoming offering, Scott Keogh, President, and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America said, "We’re excited to share the first glimpse of the newest member of the Volkswagen family." He further added, "Great things come in small packages, as Volkswagen has proven throughout the years with its iconic Beetle, Golf and Jetta. This next car will be no exception."
Now that the brand has officially unveiled the name of their upcoming offering, Hein Schafer, Volkswagen of America's senior VP for product marketing and strategy stated that “It was important to choose a name that really embodied the nature of the car and the town of Taos, New Mexico, was a perfect fit,” he further added. “It’s a small city that offers big things — from outdoor adventure to arts and design and great cuisine.”
Talking about the ideology behind the name of the car, there seems to be a VW connection. Taos was the home of John Muir, who was the author of “How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot”. Since the brand could connect immensely with the book, it can be considered to be the inspiration behind the name.
While there are no details on the exterior or interiors of the car, the vehicle is speculated to run on a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine that powers the Tiguan. However, the Taos might also run on a smaller turbo-four engine, the details of which shall slowly be revealed over time.
Lastly, there is no information on the pricing of the car. It can be expected to be a bit cheaper than the Tiguan.
