Volvo XC40 Recharge EV becomes IIHS Top Safety Pick with exceptional safety ratings

Being the creators of seatbelts, Volvo seems to have always had a sense of direction, when it comes to the safety of their cars. Interestingly, the automaker seems to have retained the sense of safety and security over their EV offerings as well. The Volvo XC40 Recharge received the Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+) rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) of the United States.

The badge now makes Volvo, the only automaker, to have such a high-security rating for almost all its car models. However, the XC40 Recharge is the first completely electric vehicle to have won the award, making the automaker one of the key players to have gathered the maximum TSP+ awards in one single year.

XC40 Recharge front

Overall, the automaker has collected over 15 TSP+ awards. Previously, the lineup of the safest cars includes the S90 Recharge, S90, V90 Cross Country, V90, S60, V60 Cross Country, S60 Recharge, XC40, XC60, XC60 Recharge, XC90, and XC90 Recharge.

With Volvo working on the aim of having 0 people killed by its car in 2020, the automaker seems to be on the right track for eliminating accidents. Further, to fast-forward its aim, the automaker has also introduced its offerings with safety measures such as evasive steering assistance, Run-off Road Mitigation, and a speed limiter that stops at 180 kmph, among others.

XC40 Recharge safety test

Talking of the process of picking up safety points in the Top Safety Pick+, any vehicle should do well in a series of six crash tests. These include driver and passenger-side small overlap front, side crash tests, head restraints, moderate overlap front, and roof strength. Further, the cars participating in the test must also pass front crash protection tests.

Looking at its rich history of safe cars, the automaker seems to have come a long way with its offerings. From the developer of the three-point seat belt to its aim of eliminating road accidents by its cars, Volvo might soon earn the tag of the safest carmaker in the world.
