Abhishek Katariya says
One of the finest state-of-the-art cars ever designed by BMW, the BMW 8-Series Convertible sits right at the top of the lineup as the biggest and most exclusive convertible car from the Bavarian giant. The Philippines car market gets the BMW 8 Series Convertible in two different variants – one each in petrol and diesel.
BMW 8 Series Convertible Interior & Features
Sharing its cabin with the 8-Series Gran Coupe, the BMW 8-Series Convertible is a brilliant mix of style and sophistication. The sporty looking M-Sport three-spoke multi-functional steering, along with the full TFT virtual cockpit placed behind it, gives the 8-Series Convertible a very smart looking driver’s cockpit, to begin with.
The center console design looks quite distinctive from the rest of the other BMWs, with a wider and free-standing trapezoidal touchscreen infotainment system placed in the middle. The tapering down layout of the center console in a trapezoidal manner accommodates AC vents as well as switches for the audio system and automatic climate control.
Even the extremely long list of premium comfort and convenience features has been shared with the 8-Series Coupe here. And sadly so is the rear seat space levels, which can become a bit cramped for taller passengers with limited legroom on offer.
8 Series Convertible Exterior
The BMW 8 Series Convertible has got all the right ingredients to be a sure shot head turner, as the low slung stance of the coupe version coupled with the open-top visual appeal of a convertible car only makes it a stunning car to look at.
The BMW 8-Series Convertible shares its entire front design with the coupe version, which means that one can find a pair of kidney-shaped grilles, which have chrome surrounds and vertical inner slats. The headlamps look simple and sleek, with them getting BMW’s most premium full Laser LED lighting technology along with C-shaped daytime running LEDs surrounding the laser bulbs.
It is from the sides where the visual drama enhances in a more pronounced manner, as the BMW 8-Series Convertible has a magical and poised low lung stance, which only gets better with its stretched profile and two-door look. Drop the roof, courtesy the convertible soft top which can open and close in just 15 seconds, and the BMW 8 Series Convertible gets even better to look at.
At the rear, the resemblance with the 8-Series Gran Coupe comes again, with the completely similar boot design, which looks quite sleek with horizontally stretched L-shaped LED tail lamps as well as a thick integrated long spoiler above the boot lid.
BMW 8 Series Convertible Ride & Handling
Like all of its stablemates, the BMW 8-Series Convertible feels fantastic to drive, with amazing levels of control behind the steering wheel is its fantastically tuned suspension setup and steering feedback.
The car is bestowed with top-notch BMW hardware, comprising of adaptive suspension setup, integral active steering, driving experience control with adaptive mode and M-Sport differential, all of which work fine along with the low slung stance and aerodynamic profile of the car.
8 Series Convertible Engine & Fuel Consumption
One can have the BMW 8-Series Gran Coupe with one of the two powertrain options to choose from. The more subtle diesel engine option here is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit, which belts out 320 PS of power and 680 Nm of torque.
On the other hand, if you want more pep and thrills, there is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 which produces 530 PS of power and 749 Nm of torque. Both the powertrain options are being paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, with all-wheel drive setup offered as standard.
BMW 8 Series Convertible Braking & Safety
As expected, the BMW 8-Series Convertible gets range-topping safety features in the form of the front, side, curtain and knee airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stability control, traction control, hill descent control, hill start assist, front and rear parking sensors, 360-degree parking camera, Emergency Stop Assistant, Steering and Lane Control Assistant, Automatic Speed Limit Assist, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go Function and Lane-Keeping Assistant with Active Side Collision Protection.
8 Series Convertible Verdict
The exclusivity of open-top motoring experience in a car which is inarguably one of the best looking cars BMW has ever designed makes the 8-Series Convertible a niche car in true sense.
