Volkswagen Golf Wagon Review 2024

The biggest car in the Golf lineup of small cars, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon is the estate version of the hugely popular Golf premium hatchback, with a stretched wheelbase and bigger bodywork at the rear. The Singapore car market gets the Volkswagen Golf Wagon in a standard R-Line variant, which is being offered with a single petrol automatic powertrain and a total of six color options – Atlantic Blue, Lapiz Blue, Indium Grey, Tornado Red, Pure White and Deep Black.

Volkswagen Golf Wagon Interior & Features

Apart from much of the exterior design, even the interior cabin of the Volkswagen Golf Wagon is a complete lift-off from the Golf hatchback, with the most evident proof of that is the common dashboard between both the cars.

The flat bottom multi-functional steering wheel with piano black inserts on the spokes as well as the large 10.2-inch full TFT colored instrument console and the sloping center console with a large 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, tapered and sleek AC vents and rounded dials for the automatic climate control are all shared with the Golf hatchback. The entire center console here is finished in a glossy piano black theme, which extends all the way down towards the transmission tunnel.

The cabin of the Volkswagen Golf Wagon gets some premium features in the form of dual-zone automatic climate control, Vienna leather upholstery, panoramic sunroof, powered driver seat with memory function and push-button start with keyless entry. Thanks to the increase in the length over Golf, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon has a much-enhanced sense of space with enormous boot space as well.

Golf Wagon Exterior

One can easily sense the fact that the Volkswagen Golf Wagon is actually a stretched version of the standard Golf hatchback, going by its complete resemblance with the latter in terms of design.

The front end of the Volkswagen Golf Wagon is completely lifted off from the Golf hatchback, and that means the former gets a pair of angular headlamps which are tapered from upper and inner corners and house dual LED projectors with C-shaped daytime running LEDs around them. Even the sleek and trapezoidal grille with dual chrome slats as well as sporty fog lamp housings with gloss black inserts are something which we have already seen on the Golf hatchback.

The side profile is where the differences between the Volkswagen Golf Wagon as well as standard Golf hatchback become more apparent. While the design till the B-pillar is exactly the same between both the cars, it is beyond that, where the Volkswagen Golf Wagon gains its own identity in the form of a bigger rear quarter window and broad C-pillar. The stretched wheelbase and longer crease running through the door handles further give it that much-required estate flavor.

At the back again, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon shares much of its look with the Golf hatchback, with the set of angular tail lamps with prominent LED inserts, large trapezoidal windscreen and lower placement of the license plate housing on the rear hatch itself completing the rear look of the car.

Volkswagen Golf Wagon Ride & Handling

The Volkswagen Golf Wagon shares even its mechanical setup with the Golf hatchback, including the suspension setup of Macpherson struts at the front and multi-link at the rear, both of which get the assistance of anti-roll bars to keep the body control at higher speeds in check. While the Volkswagen Golf Wagon drives brilliantly for a station wagon with perfectly weighted steering at a place as well, its ride quality is on a firmer side.

Golf Wagon Engine & Fuel Consumption

The range-topping version of the Golf, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon, gets the same 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine as that in the smaller hatchback versions. This engine, here too, is coupled to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and breathes out respectable figures of performance – 125 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque.

Volkswagen Golf Wagon Braking & Safety

The Volkswagen Golf Wagon is loaded to the brim with a good amount of safety features on offer, including front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, electronic stabilization programme with anti-slip regulation, driver steering recommendation, electronic differential lock, engine drag torque control, driving profile selection with eco mode, front and rear parking sensors, reverse camera and tire pressure monitoring system.

Golf Wagon Verdict

The Volkswagen Golf Wagon is at its best when it comes to discussion points of practicality on offer, as the station wagon has all the positive attributes of the Golf hatchback, including impressive driving dynamics and solid build quality, with the additional sense of space it offers.
