It was back in 2013 when the German carmaker, BMW, launched its 4 series in the Singapore market. What followed two years later was a convertible four-door Gran Coupe as a mid-life makeover to the original 4 series Gran Coupe. The all-new updated variant of the convertible was globally introduced earlier this year and is expected to reach the Singapore shores by early 2021. As of now, the current generation 4 Series is available for customers, which retails at $247,888. In terms of looks, the 4 series convertible is reminiscent of the Gran coupe version. The most notable difference is the headlight cluster where the previously fitted xenon headlamps make way to sports LED lights. The foglamps also use LED technology and are now standard in this configuration. Around back, the convertible poses LED taillights. The wheels are also re-designed, and chrome trim can be spotted around the air intakes and fog lamps. Again, BMW has not offered too many extras inside the cabin; it's all the same as the Gran Coupe. A high-gloss black panel for the centre console with chrome inserts is something to note inside the cabin. Powering the 4 Series Convertible, the 420i, is a 1998cc, 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 184 hp of max power and 270 Nm of peak torque. The convertible is heavier than its fixed-roof sibling owing to the mechanical bits required for the power-folding top and the additional chassis stiffening required to compensate for the lack of a structural roof. The BMW 4 Series Convertible locks horn with the Audi TT Roadster, the Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class, the Ford Mustang Convertible, the Toyota GR Supra, and the Alpine A110.

BMW 4 Series Convertible Interior & Features
Inside the BMW 4 Series Convertible, you will be greeted to luxury and class. There's a double-stitched dash-top, an electroplated trim on the air-con vents and door switches, and a high-gloss black panel for the centre console with chrome inserts. The steering wheel is wrapped in high-grade leather to offer a better grip; the multi-function buttons are mounted on the steering. A tablet instrument cluster displays all the necessary information to the driver. The BMW ConnectedDrive allows easy access to your car and opens the gate to the digital world of BMW. You can use vehicle apps such as news, weather, or online search on the go. The Apple CarPlay connect is also offered, but only as an option.
4 Series Convertible Exterior
The 4 Series Gran Coupe and the convertible are pretty much the same as far as the looks are concerned. The changes are subtle and are most visible at the front. The front apron and the lamps are changed. LED lights have replaced the Xenon headlamps, and even the tail gets LED lamps. New LED fog lamps have been offered as standard. It has got a sleek silhouette with wide air inlets for optimised aerodynamics and sporting appeal. The distinguishing highlight is the retractable hard rooftop. It looks good but comes with a few trade-offs. The convertible top has increased the weight and reduced the trunk space. The wind defector provides the driver and front passenger with adequate protection from gusts at neck and shoulder height, even when travelling at high speeds. When it is not needed, the collapsible sides can simply be folded together for easy and compact storage.
BMW 4 Series Convertible Ride & Handling
Driving Experience Control offers a choice between the standard Comfort mode, the more efficient EcoPro mode, and the Sport modes, for an even more dynamic drive. The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system smoothly and variably distributes drive power to the front and rear wheels for maximum traction, driving dynamics and safety in every driving situation. A variable steering with Servotronic is also offered as an option; it creates a direct and agile steering response and ensures less physical effort is required to turn the wheel. The suspension for the convertible is now stiffer, thanks to a more advanced damping system.
4 Series Convertible Engine & Fuel Consumption
The BMW 420i Convertible gets power from a 1,998cc, 4-cylinder, turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that creates 183 PS max power and 270 Nm peak torque. This power is transferred to the wheels through an eight-speed transmission setup. The steptronic transmission ensures greater driving comfort, smoother gearshifts and low fuel consumption. BMW claims it can touch a speed of 100 kmph from still in eight seconds and can reach a top speed of 230 kmph.

The safety features of the 4 Series Convertible includes passenger airbag, side airbag-front, driver airbag, anti-lock braking system, brake assist, EBD, rear seat belts, seat belt warning, day and night rearview mirror, height-adjustable front seat belts, rear camera, parking sensors, crash sensor, engine check warning, front impact beams, side-impact beams, door ajar warning, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and roll-over protection system. Features like adaptive LED headlights, intelligent emergency call, active protection, active cruise control, driving assistant and park assist are offered as an option.
4 Series Convertible Verdict
The BMW 4 Series Convertible is a great performer, but just a bit heavy and costly. But if you're a convertible sort of person, these shortcomings cannot be real deal-breakers. After all, it is worth paying a bit extra for unlimited headroom at the touch of a button.
